Walking from Johannesburg to Cape Town

Hi, my name is Gregory Gerhardt. I work for Drupal agency Amazee Labs. After three years of employment we get one month off to free our mind and do something really extreme. My project? I'm walking from Johannesburg to Cape Town. See my route

When I started training a year ago I went to the Schulthess Klinik  to set my first benchmark: I had the heart rates and lactate levels tested at staged running speeds. Now, one year later, the day of truth has come. I went for the final test. It wasn't exactly what Haile Gebrsellassie would have scored but the average 6 hours of training per week have definitely lowered my average heart rates and lactate results.

While my trek is getting seriously close I've started to increase the number of walks, fully packaged, round my home town, Zurich-Höngg. On working days it's usually late at night; on Saturdays I extend the range from 2 hours to 4 hours and walk all across the canton of Zurich - including places like Unterengstrigen, Oberengstrigen, Weiningen, Schlieren, Dietikon, Regensdorf, Rümlang, Zollikon ... you name them. The training has been a great opportunity to experience the greater Zurich area.

My Sponsor Rohner Socks kindly sent me a new bulk replacement for my training socks! Thanks a lot to Balgach and the kind words acommpanying the package.

If you've been out on a running trail recently you might have noticed one or the other person wearing what appear to be fancy-looking post-op socks. They apply graduated compression and are tighter at the bottom and gradually looser as they go up the leg.  Similar to muscles they compress the veins and help return the blood to heart and lungs. After my last trek form Zurich to Basel I was rather surprised to see what the first 6 hours did to my calf's blood vessels. One or the other reminded me more of a hire hose than anything human; not exactly what I need on my daily 12 hour hikes.

The sock selection process took me months. Choosing the right sox means deciding on material composition, thickness, shape, size, height, supportive functions such as compression, etc. - and then test the short list on long walks. The grand final took place between German producer Falke vs Swiss producer Rohner. Rohner's Treck'n travel clearly made the race.
